Flip Cam, We Hardly Knew Ye

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Cisco has decided to stop producing the Flip, the oh so useful little video camera with which you could easily upload that once-in-a-lifetime footage you just happened to capture to Facebook and Youtube. It’s all those damn smartphones fault! What with their more powerful cameras and instantaneous access to the internet in addition to being phones… what was so great about the Flip again? On the plus side, I’m sure they’ll be cheaper to pick up soon, so that’s something.

Bremach T-Rex

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Each T-Rex is hand-assembled to meet the buyers exact specifications. It can be powered from one of three chosen fuel types: gasoline, natural gas, and electric, with a hybrid option also available. The cab is all steel and is available in two configurations, single and double cab, fitting 3 and 5 individuals respectively. It’s also designed to carry upward to a 4 ton payload. So in other words: Cool truck, bro.

Journalist’s Guide To Firearms Identification

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

I’d just like to say you readers never have to worry about me making mistakes like this: I don’t consider myself a journalist.

Suppressors Legal In Washington

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

The Governor of Washington State, Chris Gregoire, signed HB 1016 into law just yesterday. This effectively allows gun owners to both own and use suppressors with their firearms. While suppressors weren’t illegal to own in Washington State before the bill was passed, using them with a firearm was considered a gross misdemeanor crime. Now, its just as legal to shoot using a suppressor within the state line as it is to own one. The bill will take effect 90 days after adjournment.

Wow, allowing someone to own a suppressor, but not to shoot with it within the same state? Why did it take this long for this bill to exist? Still, better late than never.

Thanks to NRA-ILA for the original story.

Escalation Officially Announced

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Escalation Announcement

Callofduty.com has officially announced the second content pack for Black Ops. Titled Escalation, it features four new MP maps and an “epic” zombie map. Not that I didn’t already post this, but now instead of being leaked info, it’s official.

No pricing, but it’ll most likely be $15, because Activision knows they can get away with that price. And they’re right: I’ve been bored with Black Ops for ages now, alternating back to CoD4 and MW2 instead, and I’ll still buy this pack; it’s all about the zombies. Black Ops Content Pack 2 ‘Escalation’ comes out May 3rd, exclusively for Xbox Live. It’ll probably be out a month later on Playstation Network, followed by taking forever to appear on the PC.

Terminator The Second

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Terminator 2, but in the words of William Shakespeare? Yes please, this needs to happen now! And the best part is you can help. The project is hosted on Kickstarter.com, where creative projects like this find funding from anyone willing to back them. Terminator The Second only needs $76 at the time of writing, with 19 whole days to go, so go ahead and donate a dollar or five here, if only so awesomeness like this becomes a reality.

Freddie: Real Life Camper

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Explosions via claymores, stunt jumps by members of Action Factory, airsoft weaponry made real, with a nice splash of Adobe After Effects to tie it all together. Classic freddiew. I like how he whistles the Metal Gear theme just before the action starts. Nice touch.

Brink: Ready And Able

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

This game isn’t getting nearly enough attention: high customization, parkour, team based multiplayer, beautiful graphics. It’s been described as a cross between Team Fortress 2 and Mirrors Edge. I totally agree with that, except for one thing extra: MOLOTOV COCKTAILS!

Brink comes out on May 17, 2010.

Hardcore Hardware Australia

Friday, April 8th, 2011

From a land down under comes Hardcore Hardware’s new Tomahawk. Crafted from coated D2 tool steel, the handle is wrapped in 550 cord and comes with a nylon MOLLE compatible sheath. This is brand new on the market and looks to be built with a severe dosage of arse-kickery involved.

Conflict History

Friday, April 8th, 2011

“Browse the timeline of war and conflict across the globe.”

This modification of Google maps depicts major and minor battles from thousands of years in the past to the most recent as red dots in their general location. Although not every single conflict ever is recorded (the earliest records start around 3000 BC) it does a pretty good job of getting some of the more obscure events in the history of warfare. Just drag the slider and see what occurred during the approximately 20 year period highlighted.

KSG In Action – Nutnfancy

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Here’s some footage of the Kel-Tec KSG in action in the “Eat Lead” course by Nutnfancy. To be specific, it’s a video demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of the system, how it compares to a Winchester 1300 running the same course, and some pistol shooting thrown in for good measure. Also, the video’s pretty damn long, a little over 45 minutes, so only those with an abnormally large attention span will be able to sit through the whole thing without skipping around.

Mythbusters Season Premiere Tonight

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Just a quick reminder that the new season of Mythbusters premieres tonight, April 6th, at 9pm Eastern on the Discovery Channel. It’s worth a mention if only for all the explosions and firearms that have appeared in the past seasons. Personally, I’m hoping for a lot more of the same!

Povodokus Dog Leash

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

With a pull of the trigger on the pistol-shaped handle, this dog leash retracts. It’s an interesting idea, although I’d be lying if I said I’m not completely sold on a product shaped like a gun that you point at your pet. Just too many variables when you’re walking Fido in a public place.

Black Ops: Escalation

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

This leaked add for the second Black Ops map pack reveals a few things. First, it seems the map pack’s title is Escalation. Second, it seems that four new MP maps are included and are titled Zoo, Hotel, Convoy, and Stockpile. Not very imaginative if you ask me, but maybe we’ll be able to toss unfortunate victims into the gator pit. Third, the zombie map will be called ‘Call Of The Dead’ ‘Survive’ ‘Call Of The Dead’. The pack is slated for May 3rd, according to the ad, and will be released on Xbox Live first. Of course all this is subject to change, although the ad does look legit. I think I’ll still be playing MW2.

Redback One 2-Day Basic Carbine Course: AAR

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

An Intro: I’ve had some previous experience with the M4 before, but this was the first class I took that was completely devoted to its operation. Even though it was only two days long, I still managed to pull a lot of useful information that I will definitely be using in the future. In any event, if you’re new to the carbine, or just want to polish up some skills, this is an excellent class to take.

The Instructor: Jason Falla has 6 years experience in the Australian commando regiment and a further six years in SASR. He has prior experience in counter terrorist operation, heavy weaponry, combat medicine, CQB, special reconnaissance and surveillance, and hostage rescue. In 2005, Jason relocated to the USA and worked for Blackwater for a period of 5 years as a firearms instructor before starting Redback One where he became the senior instructor and training advisor. His years of experience and mastery of the carbine really showed through his instruction.

The Weather: The first day was pretty chilly, and it stayed that way pretty much the entire day. The morning started cloudy with a light sprinkle, but thankfully this didn’t last. It definitely helped that we spend most of the day in the classroom, but more on that later. The second day was also fairly cold. It warmed up a bit as the day progressed, but a jacket was not unwelcome. Also, plenty of afternoon sun led to plenty of sunburn after the second day. What can I say? Blame my Nordic European ancestry.

My equipment: I used a Daniel Defense M4 with a DD forward grip, Magpul ACS stock, Blue Force Gear Vickers Combat Applications Sling, Surefire Scout Light with Manta Rails to hold the pressure switch, and an Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic. For my choice of magazines I used Magpul PMAGs. For the purposes of the exercises, each mag was filled to 28 rounds. I also used a Crye Precision Mag Clip for one of my mags, which I held on the left shoulder strap of my rig. My rig is a Tactical Tailor 2 piece MAV complete with an X Harness, both in MultiCam, of course.

Day 1:

We were in the classroom for about 7 hours (including the lunch break). That’s not to say it felt like wasted time. Actually, the lessons were quite informative, starting with the training objectives and leading into topics like M4 safety, characteristics of the M4 platform, the cycle of operation, how to field strip your rifle, shooting fundamentals, and zeroing. It’s definitely a great introduction for someone who’s new to the M4.

When 1500 rolled around, we did a bit of shooting. Mostly zeroing our sights from the 25m line.

After an hour and a half of zeroing and confirming our zero, we fired at low percentage targets from the high and low ready positions with follow through and post engagement exercises. That ended the day.

Day 2:

More classroom! But it was only 30 minutes long. And it was about ballistics. Having a good understanding of how the combination of your rifle and chosen ammunition affects a target is very important information. FYI, be on the lookout for Barnes Triple Shock. Best round ever [for now].

The shooting exercises, in order:

-Shooting at high and low percentage targets at 7 meters. A good warm up for the exercises to come.

-Shooting from the standing, kneeling, and prone shooting positions, and the pros and cons of each. We also worked a bit on alternative stances, such as rolling from prone.

-Tactical reloading. We went over this extensively.

-Cadence drills. Shots at 1 sec, 1/2 sec, and 1/4 sec from 7m. This is where stance and trigger control really come into play. This was also the last exercise before lunch.

-My personal favorite, the malfunction drills. We worked on failure to feed, unseated mags, failure to extract, double feeds, and the biggest malfunction of them all: bolt override. Mortar that rifle, soldier!

-Turning drills. Pivoting left and right towards the threat. About turns towards the threat. This also doubled as an exercise in shooting weak side dominant. You can’t always have your left foot forward, after all.

-Shooting on the move, specifically while moving forward. You sacrifice a stable shooting platform, so keeping good control is all the more important.

-Shooting from cover at steel. We devoted quite a few rounds to this, about one mag per cover. We practiced leaning from cover, shooting under cover, shooting above cover, ect. As predicted, some of the students took a few pieces of the cover off. Not a big deal in training, but it’s always important to remember when shooting that you’re optic has about a 2in. offset from your barrel.

-The final exercise of the day was a qualifier from the 50m line. 50 rounds, 5 points within the target, 3 points if the shots hit the body outside the target, same with headshots when the exercise called for them, 250 max score. The shots were made from various positions at various distances. We advanced to the 7m line. I managed a 210. Yea, me!

Where First Person Shooter Baddies Hail From

Monday, April 4th, 2011

This is an infographic on a list of first person shooters from 2001 onwards, and the country of origin for the various bad guys featured in them. Ok, no surprise here: a lot of Russia and China. And sometimes, both Russia and China. Ha! That’s as likely as a union between North and South Korea… Oh, that’s on here too. Throw in some Middle Eastern countries, a bit of South America, and the once-listed Nazi Germany and you have yourself a nice cocktail of conflict.

This infographic came from Geekologie.

True Gun Pr0n – Some Kind Of SMG

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Presenting the most over accessorized Uzi(?) of all time:

Credit for the photo goes to ScottsdaleGun (Scottsdale Gun Club) via yfrog. If this is their abomination, I have to question how many beers led to this seeming like a brilliant idea.

I think I’ll make ‘True Gun Pr0n’ a regular thing. What do you all think?

Does He Happen To Hold His Sidearm Sideways As Well?

OSU Buckeyes to Don Camo Helmets

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

The Ohio State University football squad will be sporting Pixelated Camouflage helmets in their upcoming April 23 home game to honor the US military. After that, half will go back to their normal color Silver scheme, while some will be autographed by Jim Tressel and sold, with all the proceeds going to benefit the Ohio National Guard Family Readiness and Warrior Support Program, LiFE (Learning in Fitness & Education) through Sports Program and the Ruth and Jesse Owens Scholars Fund.

With their orange scarlet stripe down the middle, ya gotta admit, they look kind of like an Air Force guy wearing a disco belt.

Sexy Bikini Girls With Guns

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Remember yesterday’s first article? The chick in the bikini dual wielding those Glocks? Pretty hot, right? Yeah, imagine that times a thousand, and that pretty much describes the above vid. This is definitely a better way to start the day.

The Closest Damn Thing To An April Fools Prank You’ll Get Outta Me: Duke Nukem Plays With Several Turds

Friday, April 1st, 2011

The title explains it all, except this ain’t really a joke, just completely immature toilet humor. Man, I totally hate to see this game being delayed a whole ‘nother month. Oh, NSFW and all that; you know the drill, it’s Duke after all.

Counterfeited EOTech Sights

Friday, April 1st, 2011

In a particularly despicable act, the CEO of Anaheim-based Field Sport Inc., a Mr. Yongming “Steven” Sui, along with two business associates are accused of the manufacture and advertising of approximately 700 counterfeit gun sights and 200 magnifier systems for sale online. According to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the retail value of the knock-offs is around $475,000. While Sui is believed to have fled to China, his two associates Isaac Cheuk Hang Tse and Pao Sheng Yang have been apprehended. All three face two felony counts of manufacturing and selling a counterfeit mark and possession of an assault weapon. The later two are slated to be arraigned April 22. Sui himself faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in prison if convicted, a penalty I assume carries over to the already apprehended suspects.

The thing I find so funny about this is they were ballsy enough to try this while located in the States, where they’d be sure to get caught. If they were smarter they would have stayed in China, where counterfeits like this are all too common. Probably would have been cheaper too.

Dual Wielding Glocks [In A Bikini]

Friday, April 1st, 2011

A video staring a hot chick dual wielding Glocks while wearing only a bikini? Is there any better way to start the day? Possibly, but I can’t think of anything at the moment; too busy re-watching this vid.
