Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

I went and saw Transformers 3 yesterday, and I liked it. But instead of writing paragraph after paragraph explaining who would benefit most from paying $8.50 (or whatever it costs to see a movie where you live), a simple list seemed like the best option. So, without further ado:

See it if you like:

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
– Fighting Robots
– Good 3D
– To laugh (Ken Jeong (Jerry Wang), Julie White (Judy Witwicky), John Malkovich (Bruce Brazos), Alan Tudyk (Dutch), random sayings peppered throughout the film by Autobot and Decepticon alike)
– Explosions
– Leonard Nemoy
– More explosions
– Wingsuits
– Even more explosions
– Good CGI
– Autobots blowing up an illegal Iranian nuclear plant
– Freedom!

Don’t see it if:

– You’re looking for an extensive and well thought out plot.
– You hate explosions

Really, it’s mindless Summer action cinema at its best. If you’re looking for that, then you might just enjoy Dark of the Moon. For everyone else, go see Cars 2.

Double-Barrel Quad Rail

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

If you’ve been pining for a 12-gauge ‘tactical’ double-barrel but aren’t in the market for a whole new shotgun, then you could always try the LaserLyte ADP-KZ Double Barrel Quad Rail. After installing this rail system, you gain access to four three-inch picatinny rails to attach your favorite lights, lasers, and other rail compatible items to your favorite break-action double-barrel scattergun. The rail comes in two pieces and is made from aircraft grade aluminum with a rubber covering inside the rail that protects your barrels from wear while six hex screws secure the system to the barrels. I’m sure someone’s overjoyed to see a product like this come out, but I’m not one of them.

It’s Cool And All, But The Price…

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

The Pomson 6000 Sub Atomic Wave Gun is yet another wonderful addition to the line of Dr. Grordbort’s Infallible Aether Oscillators courtesy of the fine, creative minds at Weta. If features a urethane resin and metal construction, articulated triggers, levers and switches, a custom built stand, certificate of authenticity and a limited edition art print, provided you’re the possessor of one of the first nine Pomsons. There’s just one problem: it’s freaking expensive! The Wave Gun is neat, and the available colors are pretty spiffy, but it takes a Hell of a lot of neat-n-spiffy to justify spending thousands of dollars on a non-functioning firearm, especially a fictional one. However, if you happen to be a model wave gun enthusiast, have the cash, and don’t mind plunking down a $1000 non-refundable deposit, then the Pomson 6000 can be yours for the low, low price of $4000-7000. If I had that kind of scratch lying around, I’d spend it on real firearms, but that’s just me.

Canister To The Crotch

Monday, June 27th, 2011

A man at the Vancouver Riots took what appears to be a canister of tear gas to the crotch, where it promptly discharged, knocking him on his back. The man, who’s name I am voluntarily withholding, has been going around Youtube, having any video of this incident taken down due to copyright infringement. Although I doubt the legality of his claims, get your jollies while you can, because this vid could come down at any time.

Black Powder Red Earth: Part 1

Monday, June 27th, 2011

I just got a hold of an advanced review copy of the new ‘Black Powder Red Earth’ graphic novel. Since I enjoyed the Facebook game, I was eager to read through it and see how good it actually was. I’m happy to say it does the property justice.

“Black Powder Red Earth: Part 1” by Jon Chang, Kane Smith and Josh Taylor takes place in a near future Iraq, 2019 to be exact. The story follows the actions of a PMC operating in the area of New Basrah, Basran. Their actions primarily include the capturing of high-value targets, negotiations with government officials, and information gathering. Showing the wide range of operations undertaken by these individuals definitely adds to the believability of the story. From earlier dealings with Echelon Software, I know a good amount of research and cooperation with actual operators went into making the story closer to reality then most other fiction dealing with this subject matter, and it shows.

Complementing the story is the art, which is done in a somewhat gritty style that matches the setting and mood perfectly. The coloring, to be expected considering the setting, is heavy in earthy tones. Variants of brown and tan are found in almost every panel, although more vibrant colors are also represented from clothing, cars, vegetation, and of course people. Characters are also outlined with a fairly thick border, which gives them a more pronounced appearance. There is also plenty of detail to be found, especially in the background of many panels. No scene feels lacking visually.

In short, I recommend giving this graphic novel a look. It’s a fine addition to the Black Powder Red Earth universe, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment to see how the story develops. It’s definitely one of the better new IPs to come out as of late.

The hardcover of “Black Powder Red Earth: Part 1” will be available later this year.

Own The Bullet With Your Name On It

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

That’s the slogan of ‘My Bullet’, a company that allows you to custom order either a .50 rifle round or 20mm cannon round with a personal inscription. Both are available in either brass and silver, and can come packaged in a metal case, window case, wall plaque or shield. Also available is the ‘Bin Laden Bullet’, a pre-made .50 round engraved with the words ‘Osama Bin Laden’ and ‘Got him!’ on opposite sides. In all honesty, an engraved 5.56 would be more appropriate, but I suppose its the thought that counts.

Gears Of War 3 – Horde Mode 2.0

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Take a look at this video for the newly expanded Horde mode for Gears of War 3. With fortifications, objectives, weapons drops, a money system and boss rounds, it looks like a fresh new take on the king of all survival modes.

Gears of War 3 drops September 20th, 2011.

Trenched

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Part mech combat, part tower defense, Trenched is the latest downloadable XBLA title from Double Fine. It takes place in an alternate history shortly after WWI where two radio operators survied the “Broadcast”, a mysterious signal that killed a large segment of the population. As an unexpected consequence both gain incredible intelligence and knowledge of advanced technology. One of the operators, Frank Woodruff, invents mechanized legs while the other, Vladamir Farnsworth, essentially creates television in the form of ‘Monovision’. This somehow drives the later mad, so he creates Monovision robots nicknamed ‘tubes’, and uses them to begin his conquest of the world. In response, Frank’s knowledge goes towards the invention of the ‘Mobile Trench Brigade’, a fighting force comprised of giant, mechanized fighting machines that can also set up stationary defenses.

Sounds cool, right? Well, if you have an Xbox, you’re in luck, because it’s available now.

BodyGuard Armored Glove

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Ignoring the fact that it looks like it replaces your forearm with a giant slug, the BodyGuard Armored Glove might have a lot going for it. After all, housed inside its 3-pound gastropod-esque shell is a taser, laser pointer, video camera, and flashlight. That’s right, everything the crime fighting forces of the world need to deter even the most dangerous of criminals. It was designed by David Brown, a man who makes a living being a cameraman, editor, and producer of musical acts by artists such as Rage Against The Machine and Snoop Dog. Plus, Kevin Costner, who happens to be a friend of Mr. Brown, is a chief investor for the product. If First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar believes in the BodyGuard, then who is anyone to question its usefulness? It even won a Popular Science 2011 Invention Award, and they must know a lot about good inventions, since ‘Science’ is in the title of their publication. In any event, the first demo unit will be released to the LA Sheriff’s Department later this year, so if it finds success there, every cop in America could be wearing one of these in the near future!

FM 999-3 Counter-Zombie Operations at the Fireteam Level

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

This (fictional) manual details “the primary doctrinal reference on conducting fire team sized infantry operations in a Zombie infested environment in the United States.”, care of Army Zombie Combat Command. The topics contained within include how to identify the undead or soon-to-be undead, effective weaponry and tactics against the undead, and other similar topics, all zombie-related. It’s a pretty solid guide, and since it is free and all there’s no reason not to give it at least a quick peak. A word of warning, though: the creators are definitely familiar with the works of Max Brooks, frozen zombies and all.

Arma2 Free

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Arma2, the well-known, highly customizable military simulator program, is now free… if you don’t mind a few missing features. What it does have: free military simulation with accurate battlefield simulation including bullet ballistics and material penetration, a comprehensive range of 300+ weapons, units, and vehicles, multiplayer with 50+ players and hundreds of AI controlled units in large-scale maps, free dedicated server support for Linux and Windows OS users, and mission editors and advanced scripting. What it’s missing: HD graphics, support for user mods (no money, no MultiCam), the story campaign, Operation Arrowhead, and BAF and PMC addons. Basically, it’s not missing much, feature-wise, and the price is right, so I know I’ll give it a shot. It’ll be out sometime this month.

Bioshock Infinite: Factions At War

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Thank the powers that be! Games these days have had a severe lack of the C96 Mauser. Oh, and the rest of the game looks great as well. Between the crazy floating city, warring factions, ability-altering vigors and nostrums, and tears in the space-time continuum, Bioshock Infinite looks to be a rip-roaring good time when it finally comes out next year. The wait is almost unbearable (for the C96 clone, that is).

SEAL Team X Wants YOU!

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The Mad Duo

Conspiracy theories about the death of Bin Laden may abound, and deep sea divers with more optimism than common sense may be diving to find his body, but we’ll never know the identity of the trigger-puller who actually put metal to meat during the raid at Abbottabad…or will we?

Want to be known as the operator who killed the worlds most wanted man?

Visit eBay.

Yep, that’s right boys and girls. Hype Comics of Miami FL is releasing a comic version of the fateful raid in Pakistan, and if you bid high enough they’ll put your face on the operator who pulls the trigger at the moment of truth. You won’t me a member of DevGru though. You’ll be a shooter on Seal Team X.

“The auction winner will also receive a panel of original hand-drawn artwork with their character in action,” says Hype’s CEO Scott Owneby, “proudly autographed by the original artist.”

The auction began on June 13th and is scheduled to last until June 23rd. As of Friday the 17th there were six bids, the highest $250, a seemingly lackluster response but it’s still early.

“Anybody is welcome to bid,” states Ownbey. “The only requirement, due to pre-existing story considerations, is that the winning bidder be male.”

Seal Team X: The Blood of Bin Laden is scheduled for release as a digital comic book for Kindle, Nook, iPad and other devices with eBook apps. Apparently, Blood of Bin Laden is only the first in an entire SEAL Team X series.

Hype advises that they’ll be donating a portion of the proceeds to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).

More about the contest here.

If you have any ideas for us to discuss, review or revile, visit us at Breach-Bang-Clear or FaceBook, or just e-mail us…unless you’re going to whine or complain about our opinions, writing style or philosophy in which case don’t bother. MAD DUO CLEAR!

Interactive .50 Cal

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Youtuber ratedrr (Richard Ryan) has recently posted the Interactive .50 Cal series of videos. By clicking on the annotations in the video above, you’re taken to one of three different videos, two that feature the Barret M82 fired through different camera angles, and one that, well, I won’t spoil the surprise, but it does its best to smack some sense into all the 12-year-old CoD players of the world. Oh, and make your choice quickly. Richard may be putting on a brave face, but holding up a 40 pound rifle that way is far from an easy task.

More Duke Nukem Merchandise

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Duke Nukem Forever has been out since Tuesday, and though the reviews are extremely diverse, personally I love it. It’s really a game for the long-time fans, and nobody else. Gearbox Software understands this, and as such has created a lot of excellent merchandise, like the Duke Nukem barware. These glasses are available with two different logos, Duke Nukem’s Titty City or Duke’s Whiskey, done in the style of Jack Daniel’s. Also available is the restocked Whiskey shirts, featuring the same logo as the barware.

I Stand Corrected: It’s ‘Annihilation’, Not ‘Retaliation’. My Bad.

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Nobody called me out on this yet, so I figured I would before anyone had the chance. I blame the bad source I used. 😛

Anyway, Black Ops Content Pack 3, titled Annihilation, will be released June 28th exclusively on Xbox Live (for a month, or so). It features 4 new MP maps and a new Zombie Map, and will cost $15. Fans are rejoicing, haters are hating, and I’m still left going ‘meh’. After seeing that Zombie footage, I think I’ll skip it, and instead let the Youtube masses discover every secret for me.

Turkey Cracks Down On Hackers

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Turkish police captured and arrested 32 individuals believed to be involved in the hacking and subsequent takedown of government websites last Thursday. The attack was allegedly executed by ‘Anonymous’, a well-known if loosely-affiliated hacker collective, in response to the internet filters the Turkish government plans to implement in August. The arrests were made last Sunday, the day of Turkey’s national elections, in 12 different cities, and included eight minors and a lawyer. ‘Anon’ has already pledged to “fight” Turkey over the internet filters. I believe the arrests will only further increase their aggression.

Another Black Ops Map Pack, Another $15

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

For Call of Duty: Black Ops, this situation seems oddly familiar: info in the form of an ad is leaked that details the name of the new content pack and the titles of the maps featured within. The only difference with last time is A) the image is out of focus, and B) the title of the zombie map is unknown, due to said lack of focus. What we do know is the pack is titled ‘Retaliation’ and features 4 brand new MP maps: Hangar 18, Hazard, Drive-In, and Silo. According to the user on the Black Ops form who posted the image, the pack will be released June 28th. This, like the other packs, will be exclusive to Xbox Live for a limited period.

I’ll get it, but only to see where they could possibly take Zombies next. How can they top playing as Freddy Kruger, Machete, Buffy, and Merle Dixon?

Gun Safety Gone Wong

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

A fairly unorthodox PSA about practicing gun safety while filming anything for Youtube. I know it’s played for laughs, but I couldn’t help but cringe the whole time through. Also, a nice camo by Freddy Wong, if the title didn’t give it away.

WIKUS Competition Chopper – BLADE Show

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Mantis Knives had some great-looking blades on display, but the one that really caught my eye was the WIKUS. With a total weight of 24 oz. and an overall length of 15″ with a 10″ blade made from M-4 tool steel, it doesn’t seem all that different from most knives, aside from the rather large size. However, it’s been billed as the ‘world’s first “smart” knife’ due to a unique feature: it’s laser guided.

By pushing a button on the handle, the WIKUS projects a red laser beam downward, showing exactly where you’ll make your cut. At the very least it’s an interesting concept, but I’ll let you make your own conclusions about the usefulness of that feature. I also saw nothing about availability and pricing, but I’ll release that information as it surfaces.

Brothers In Arms: Furious 4

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Brothers in Arms is a series by Gearbox Software that takes place during WWII. It was unique for a FPS in that actual strategy was needed to win battles. Having AI controlled members of your squad lay suppressive fire on the enemy while you used an overhead map to plan and execute flanking maneuvers was often the key to victory. At least, that was the old BiA games. This one looks to be going the route of Inglourious Basterds, trading historical accuracy for crazy characters, violent action, and a fair share of comedy. We can only wait and see until next year to find if Gearbox jumped the shark with their latest attempt at WWII interactivity.

Bawidamann Pögn – BLADE Show

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Bawidamann was in full force at BLADE show, displaying both awesome pin-up art and awesome blades. Although I was practically drooling over the Randgridr they had on display (it’s a modern-day trench knife; what’s not to love?), I went with the cord wrapped Pögn you see above. Made from S35-VN steel with a “154 cm “V” gound or chisel ground” grind, this knife features an overall length of 7.25″ with a blade length of 3 3/8″, and uses paracord as a handle material. It’s light-weight, concealable, and comes with its own Kydex sheath. Simply put, its one bad-ass blade.

Special Forces Prepare For Possible Terror Attack At Rugby World Cup

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Members of the SAS and Counter Terrorism Tactical Assault Group working with armed police in Auckland are holding anti-terrorism exercises in preparation for the Rugby World Cup, held in New Zealand this year. Exercises include scenarios such as a bombing and kidnapping, and are being performed in locations including Papakura, Ardmore and Mercer. This allows the forces to test their skills in an environment in which they would be used. Due to the secretive nature of Special Forces, the exact location of the operations are unknown.
