Hults Bruk Introduces American Felling Axe By Dave Canterbury

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Not really that tactical, but on the other hand, who doesn’t love a good axe?

The ultimate woodsman’s axe designed by survival and wilderness skills instructor, Dave Canterbury

Åby, Sweden – (Aug. 3, 2016) – Hults Bruk, the world’s oldest active axe manufacturer, is proud to introduce a new felling axe to their acclaimed line of Swedish hand-forged axes. Created by survival and wilderness skills instructor, blacksmith and New York Times bestselling author, Dave Canterbury, the new design is based on professional felling axes made popular during the 19th century American forestry industry boom.

Felling large trees the traditional way is an art requiring skill and a proper axe. Good felling axes are often expensive competition designs, too heavy for practical outdoor use. Understanding the features of a tool, and the tool’s intended purpose, are key elements to consider when creating the perfect woodsman’s axe. Canterbury settled on a purpose built design made for heavy use in an environment of hardwood trees. By meticulously pairing the right style of axe head with the right kind of handle, the American Felling Axe drops dense, large sized trees effectively, allowing the user to work longer without tiring.

Unlike modern curved handles that provide forward momentum and leverage at the expense of control, the Hults Bruk American Felling Axe features a perfectly straight, 32-inch American hickory handle to reduce wrist pivoting on the swing. Canterbury and Hults Bruk blacksmiths poured through several traditional models and uncovered a renowned, reliable Montreal pattern axe head. Useful for more than just felling, the pattern features wide cheeks for splitting and a long, razor sharp bit for felling, bucking and processing wood. Weighing 3 1/2 lbs., the axe head is made with high quality Swedish steel, expertly forged at the historic Hults Bruk factory.

Canterbury, a blacksmith who makes many of his own tools, doesn’t have the facilities to make larger tools like axes and felt Hults Bruk was the company to craft his version of a traditional American felling axe. “Hults Bruk is the oldest axe manufacturer in the world,” remarks Dave Canterbury. “Their quality and passion for excellence makes them the perfect choice for a design that is both a usable axe for any woodsman and also an heirloom-worthy tool that can be passed from generation to generation.”

“Dave understands axe design from both the perspective of an outdoor survival instructor and as a blacksmith,” says Gerard Pegelow, Export Director of Hults Bruk. “We’re proud to partner with Dave and bring his vision to reality.”

CROSMAN CORPORATION RESPONDS TO ATA POSITION STATEMENT ON AIRBOWS

    Monday, July 25th, 2016

    Crosman Airbow

BLOOMFIELD, New York (JULY 25, 2016) Since its introduction in January, Crosman Corporation’s Benjamin® Pioneer Airbow® has captured the attention of rifle hunters seeking a safe and efficient entry into the exciting world of bowhunting, and crossbow owners who are drawn to it for its safe and uncomplicated operation. The Archery Trade Association (ATA) recently issued a negative position statement on the Airbow® that contained misstatements about this revolutionary hunting weapon.

Contrary to what the ATA has stated, Crosman Corporation does pay the required excise tax that goes towards conservation efforts supported by Pittman Robertson funds. Although pneumatic weapons are currently exempt from this tax, the arrows used by the Airbow® are subject to the tax. Additionally, because Crosman wants to support conservation efforts along with firearms manufacturers and other archery companies, Crosman is proactively pursuing the removal of the tax exemption for certain large bore pneumatic weapons, including the Airbow®.

The Airbow® may not meet the ATA’s definition of “pure” archery equipment; however, hunters that currently use archery weapons and firearms continue to petition their state wildlife and legislative leaders to make it a legal alternative to use in their preferred seasons. Consumers are drawn to the Airbow® because its performance compares closely to, if not exceeds, most crossbows. Furthermore, both consumers and state officials that have experienced the capabilities of the Airbow® firsthand recognize it as a safe alternative to crossbows.

Professional hunter Jim Shockey stated it best in explaining his support of the Pioneer Airbow®:

“Despite equipment innovations over the years, we hunters have learned to coexist. I believe we’ve become more accepting of each other, no matter what type of hunting tool we choose. And this is a good thing for the future of our hunting heritage. As hunting equipment manufacturers have innovated, the hunting market has grown, more people have jobs in our industry, and wild places and wild animals are better off. More hunters mean more dollars for wildlife conservation.”

Two hundred years ago an airgun helped lead the expansion of the West as part of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery expedition. Today, Crosman Corporation continues the exploration of new territory with pneumatic power and the Airbow® is leading the way.

Protech Tactical Debuts The New Bark-9 Carrier For Today’s Canine Officer

    Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

    Bark-9

The refined carrier enhances protection and maneuverability for canine officers

Jacksonville, Fla. – Safariland today announced the all-new Protech® Tactical Bark-9™ carrier, the next generation of protection in canine tactical carriers. As the industry’s best-in-class canine armor, the Bark-9 carrier is the first to meet the needs of police dogs for coverage, flexibility and maneuverability. Its contoured design allows for high-speed application and assaults vital for outperforming an assailant in high-threat situations.

The load-bearing carrier was redesigned to address the changing tactics of today’s canine units to be compact and lighter weight. In recent years, some departments have transitioned from large dog breeds to smaller, athletic canines whose speed and physical techniques are critical for the challenges of the job.

“With the demand for canine officers increasing and threat levels at an all-time high, this top-of-the line carrier delivers the necessary protection with maneuverability,” said Brian Santimauro, Category Director, Tactical Armor. “The Bark-9 tactical carrier was designed with the same passion and innovation as our products for the human officer.”

The interior of the Bark-9 tactical carrier features 420-denier Cordura® diamond ripstop nylon for breathability and a comfortable fit. Reinforced stitching on the exterior of the 1000-denier Cordura® nylon carrier resists mission wear and tear, prolonging the life of the carrier.

Notable features include a high-profile hook, loop and buckle closure system, a restraint handle with D-rings for adjustable leash attachment and a modular webbing platform along the spine of the carrier for attaching video equipment. A detachable spine can be added to the back of the carrier to provide ballistic overlap with lengthened ballistic protection.

Integral to the company’s product development process, the Bark-9 was distributed to several U.S. law enforcement agencies for wear-testing. This field input facilitated discoveries and design innovations to make this the next generation of tactical carriers for today’s canine officers. The Bark-9’s product testing, along with all Safariland gear, ensures that the company delivers the best performance possible.

The Bark-9 carrier is currently offered with four ballistic packages to accommodate various mission requirements and is available now with MSRPs ranging from $1,410.00 to $2,050.00, based on ballistics selection. The standard color offering is black, and other colors are available upon request. For more information, please visit www.safariland.com/protech-tactical.

The Roark Revival – Fear The Sea Mesh Snapback Hat

    Monday, July 18th, 2016

    IMG_2013

A reader sent in a pic of a Roark Revival ‘Fear The Sea’ mesh snapback hat they found at Sun Diego Board Shop in Mission Beach, San Diego. The hat itself is a “premium trucker hat”, with front panel “Fear the Sea” patch, adjustable snapback, and foam front and mesh back. What’s of real interest is the camo pattern, and how it differs from the one presented on the company’s website. This in-store variant sports an interesting blended woodland-esque pattern, however the example shown on the website is clearly different:

    fearthesea_rh146_cam_f_1

The example on the site (in the ‘Cam-Cam’ variant) shows a pattern that has more than a passing resemblance to Brookwood Transitional pattern. If I saw a hat more like the one on the site, I’d pick it up in a heartbeat. I don’t wear trucker caps very well, but Brookwood’s camo patterns are pretty cool.
