Tank Vest

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

The Tank Vest is a modular, PALS webbing based storage system that allows users to attach MOLLE and ALLICE gear to their motorcycle to improve storage capacity. Tank Vests are made from 1000 denier Cordura nylon and uses a system of military grade straps and synthetic buckles to attach to the tank frame. This separates the Tank Vest from other storage options that use magnets or require drilling into the bike’s frame. A feature also unique to the Tank Vest is it fits around the gas cap, negating the need to remove the vest during refueling. Currently, Tank Vests are being made for Kawasaki KLR650, KTM950/990 Adventure motorcycles, some models of Harley Davidson, the XR650R, and the Boulevard 800, with a vest for the Vstrom 1000 coming out mid-September; more models are being made based on customer demand.

The Tank Vest is available in the following colors: Black, Coyote Brown, Woodland MARPAT, ACU, MultiCam, OD Green, and Safety Orange.

Red 2 Alpha on the HSGI hat

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Long-time Tactical Fanboy reader and frequent smartass comment-putter-inner Red2Alpha has done a review of the High Speed Gear Inc. tactical baseball cap on Military.com. We’ve got some op-ed coming up from R2A here ourselves, all featuring startlingly big words and they’re not even drawn out in crayon. Watch for that next week. Read the review; buy a hat.

Judging from the eyebrows and hair, this is either Sam Elliot or Mean Gene Higdon.

Crye Precision Plate Carrier (overview)

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Check out this video from a dedicated MilSim Airsofter. It looks over all the standard features of the Crye Precision JPC. He says we’ll be some additional videos in the near future showing the different pouches and modular pieces mounted to it.

New Platatac Kit

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Platatac just posted a picture of a new rig on their Facebook wall. It’s a niche piece of kit but they’re wondering if anyone else would be interested in it.  Go check it out, let ’em know what you think. Many people are unaware that the Australian company frequently builds small batches of specialized kit that never goes out on their commercial site. If they make just a few dozen it might cost as much as $400. If they manufacture over a hundred the price could be cut in half. Go check it out. (Platatac’s website at http://www.platatac.com/)

Morale Patch of the Week: Warrior Labs

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Warrior Laboratories is a gear review site that covers gear in such varied categories as Vests and Plate Carriers, K-9 Gear and Sharp and Pointy Things. (I enjoy the latter category most, largely because of the name.) The staff of Warrior Laboratories appear to be law enforcement, with a strong background in tactical operations, K9 operations, firearms instruction and (off duty) outdoor pursuits. You might check ’em out.

In the meantime, I’m grooving on this new PVC patch they released, courtesy of Combat Swag. In addition to their website you can find Warrior Laboratories on Facebook.

Hat tip to BOLO Report.

Overade Foldable Bike Helmet

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Designed by Patrick Jouffret of Agency 360, a French design studio
in collaboration with engineer Philippe Arrouart, the Overade is a bicycle helmet designed to fold into a compact shape when not in use, for easy storage in a bag or backpack. It also offers the same level of protection as a standard bicycle helmet. The goal of its design was to create a portable helmet that would encourage more cyclists to wear them. Prototypes for the Overade have existed since 2010, but commercial production is expected later this year.

SHOT Show 2012: The Body Specs “Pistol” EyePro

Friday, January 27th, 2012

As you might have expected, there were a number of sunglasses, goggles and other types of eyepro at SHOT. Body Specs had several on display, but the most interesting were the Pistol model. They’re a fairly high impact wrap style eye-pro, hard coated for scratch resistance and all the usual tacti-goggle-glass features.

The cool thing about them, however, was the adjustability feature. The lenses are capable of telescoping out and panascoping up and down (angling), allowing you to adjust for length (fit from your face) and the cant of the goggles themselves. Whether you’re one of those good looking guys make everything look good or one of those big mongoloid types with a huge forehead, you can fine tune the fit. Cant them down so they don’t bump your eyebrows, adjust if so they aren’t molested by the front of your helmet, the lighting or your shooting position. If you prefer an adjustment from when you’re got a helmet on versus when it’s off, easily done (same as if you prefer a modification from standing to prone).

The nosepiece has a wide contact area, doesn’t seem to slip at all, and supports an Rx insert if you need corrective lenses, and they have some new specialized purple or brown lenses made for competitive shooters.

One question we’d have would be how frequently you can adjust them before they begin to wear down. Upon first try, they have sufficient resistance but in fairness we’d have to ask long term would they start slipping on their own? It would be impossible to say without putting them through field trials, but at first glance and a quick “try-on” they feel pretty good. In any case, they only run $40 retail, which is pretty inexpensive compared to some of the Gucci military goggles and better known eyepro. Might be worth taking a crack at it.

Bod Specs is a woman-, veteran-owned business based in Grass Valley, CA. You can call 530-268-8882 or e-mail the owner directly at [email protected]. They do have a distributor on the GSA Schedule if you need one.

The Pistol comes with smoke and clear lenses, retention lanyard and a semi-rigid carry case you can attach to your gear should you be so inclined. Oh, and the Pistol has an NSN:

SHOT Follow-up: Blue Force Gear’s Itty Bitty Dump Pouch

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Soldier Systems ran an article about Blue Force Gear and their new Helium Whisper kit, including a really nice little dump pouch that you could damn near tuck into a handcuff case or your pocket (were you so inclined). This is some video we took at SHOT of Blue Force Brittney (smart, capable, a great shot and pretty too…what’s not to like?) discussing the dump pouch (spent mag pouch, whatever; when I was growing up it was just a dump pouch). Check it out and maybe getcha one.

If you’re not already doing so, you should follow Blue Force Brittney and Blue Force Gear Spotted on Facebook. You can  also check out Blue Force Gear on line.

SHOT Show 2012: Winners of the Spartan Imports/Dalton Fury Raffle

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

As you may be aware, Spartan Imports ran a raffle at SHOT Show to raise money for Stand by the Wounded and to help promote Dalton Fury’s new Delta Force novel Black Site. Their booth had customized airsoft guns that replicated exactly what Dalton carried in the Battle of Tora Bora in Afghanistan, where he was the ground Delta Force commander – cool thing was, Dalton and some of his teammates turned up to sign the weapons! Anyway, they sold quite a few raffle tickets for those 5 advanced copies (Spartan Imports and Elite Defense thanks all who supported the effort) and Tactical Fanboy would like to congratulate the winners (among whom was the CEO of Tango Down).

Congratulations! Thanks for supporting a good cause. Now go order a copy of the book, cuz it’s pretty damn good.

SHOT Show 2012 – Hazard 4

Hazard 4 had an impressive showing of new bags, apparel, and accessories at this year’s SHOT Show.

Poncho Villa

20120118-085216.jpg

The Poncho Villa is made from a water-resistant, breathable softshell fabric with 100% waterproof seams throughout. It has large Velcro panels on the front and back for agency identification, as well as smaller panels on the shoulders and head-back. Large perimeter grommets allow the Villa to be hung as a tarp. A generous fit easily encompasses packs, bags, head wear, and other gear, and side snaps and a front to chin zipper allow the wearer to close the edges and neck in severe weather. The entire poncho fits into its own vented front pocket for storage.

JL Bourne Talks Zombie Loadout on Gear Scout

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

JL Bourne, author of Day by Day Armageddon, did a guest blog over on Gear Scout. We’ve taken the liberty linking to it here, for two reasons: one, the author is JL Bourne. Two, the gear is the First Spear OAGRE, and we really like First Spear.

You might want to read some background first.

If you think JL Bourne is cool (if you don’t, you probably warm your milk and collect prize show cats) then check out his article over on Gear Scout.

Practical Testing: MilSim Eye Safety

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Here are a couple pretty good videos on goggles, facemasks and eye safety for you MilSim shooters out there. Wearing eye-pro should be a no-brainer along the lines of “don’t get drunk and stick try to have sex with the garbage disposal while it’s on, or ever“, but we still see knuckleheads pushing their goggles up, removing their glasses or otherwise imperiling their vision. While this would seem to be a Darwinian situation that is self-correcting, people make mistakes, and we’d hate to see someone lose part or all of their vision to a simple screw-up or a moment of absent-mindedness. (TFB Knuckledragger, one of our other writers, tells us he met an AF Security Forces guy on Masirah Island right after 9/11 who was unable to pursue his dream of trying for the CCTs because he’d screwed up and taken a paintball to the eye. This isn’t to say his career in the AF wasn’t honorable or worthy of respect, but it wasn’t the dream he might very well have realized if not for one moment of lapsed judgment.)

Anyway, check it out. Do it safe.

12 Tactical Days of Christmas are Coming!

Monday, December 12th, 2011

What It Is
Everybody knows the popular Christmas Carol, “The 12 Days of Christmas” but what many people don’t know is that it actually starts on the day after Christmas and ends on the 6th of January. Well this year, Tactical Fanboy will be working with The BOLO Report and Soldier Systems Daily to bring you the 12 Days of Tactical Christmas.

How It Works
We have lined up a seriously cool (and tacti-cool) list of sponsors and, just like in the song, each day we will give away the requisite number of items. For example on the fist day we will give away a single item to a single winner. On the second day we will give away two of the same item, one each to two different winners. On the third day, three winners will each receive an item and so on, and so on until 78 total prizes have been awarded.

12 Tactical Days of Christmas

How To Enter
Each day, we will post the days giveaway on one of the three websites. The rules for that day will be included in the post. To enter, you will have to follow the instructions which will consist of responding to a question in the comments section of THAT post. There will be a limited period of time to respond and then the comments will be closed. Once the comments are closed the day’s winners will be randomly selected and contacted via the email provided in the comments. This is why it is imperative that you provide a valid email address. If you don’t, we can’t contact you to tell you you’ve won.

It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to be a fan of one or two or all three on Facebook…you know, just in case…Soldier Systems, BOLO Report and of course Tactical Fanboy.

Look for a special surprise at the end of the 12 days. It’s going to blow you away!

No purchase necessary.

Void where prohibited.

Unclaimed prizes will be forfeit.

If there’s nothing in the prize list you want or need, then you’re probably a hippie, a peace protester or the greatest and most accomplished geardo in the history of guys that collect Gucci kit.
